On Friday afternoon, Sassa announced that the Sassa grant online application system is down due to maintenance being done. A statement released read, “The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is currently enhancing and conducting maintenance work on the Online Grants Application system”.

The system has not been accessible from 12 to 17 September 2024 to allow the maintenance work to be conducted in order to improve it’s stability. During this period, members of public will not be able to apply for social grants online.

If you want to apply for Sassa grants, you are instructed to apply at your nearest Sassa office. Here, staff will guide you through the application process. If you’re unable to apply due to illness or age, you can authorise someone to apply on your behalf.

Sassa explained that this maintenance is important so that they can make sure that their systems are efficient and reliable “to stand the test of time in our resolve to pay the right social grant, to the right person, at the right time and place”.

Sassa grants are a lifeline for millions of South Africans with more than receiving 18 million people receiving permanent grant payments.

Sassa would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to our valued clients.

Sassa Grant Payments

Sassa grant payments are made during the first week of the month, excluding public holidays and weekends.

Sassa has also emphasised that beneficiaries are not obligated to collect their funds immediately. The money will remain in their accounts until needed.

Sassa grant beneficiaries have two options for receiving their grants.

They can choose to have their Sassa grant automatically deposited into their bank account. This is the recommended option, as the money stays safe in the account until it’s needed.

Alternatively, beneficiaries can collect their grants in cash from various locations, including ATMs, Pick n Pay stores, Checkers stores, Shoprite stores, and Boxer stores.
