Department of Basic Education takes steps to combat school-based GBV with new policies and initiatives aimed at creating safer schools.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. To this end, the DBE has implemented several initiatives to address gender-based violence (GBV) in schools.

A recent review of violence against children in South Africa revealed alarming rates of GBV, particularly among girls. In response, the DBE has launched programs to promote gender equality, prevent GBV, and provide support to affected students.
Key initiatives include
- Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Providing age-appropriate information on sexual health, relationships, and consent.
- Girls Education Movement/Boys Education Movement: Fostering gender equality values and promoting positive gender norms.
- Care and Support for Teaching and Learning Framework: Coordinating multi-sectoral support for schools.
The DBE is also collaborating with other government departments and agencies to raise awareness of and implement prevention strategies.
While progress has been made, the DBE acknowledges that more needs to be done to eradicate GBV from South African schools. The department remains committed to working towards a future where all students can learn in a safe and inclusive environment.
